Image Description
Bombo Quarry has taught me so much over the last 7 years throughout my photography journey. Its seen me chasing light, big waves, the Milky Way and even storms full of lightning over the years. I have personally felt that I have never captured an image that truly resonated with me and did the location justice until this morning. Waking up at 4:15am the usual hour drive to Kiama I didn’t expect much as the sky was cloudless. But upon nearing Bombo a thick set of clouds stuck to the horizon. Over an hour until sunrise the clouds had already started to turn a slight pink colour, I didn’t want to get my hopes up but the signs of something special happening were definitely starting to show. Arriving at the quarry most of the light had vanished, with it the colour. With 20 minutes to sunrise remaining I decided that if any colour would happen I would most likely get it at the southern end. So I made the walk down to “The Boneyard” or “The Trench” as some photographers call it. This spot is one of the most dangerous photography locations in NSW. A mix of slippery rocks, huge waves and the unpredictability of the ocean always gets the heart racing. Waves double in size as they race down the northern trench of Bombo. I have become victim to the ocean a number of times in this spot, getting drenched head to toe in water and almost losing a camera. But this morning about 10 minutes before sunrise the light ignited the sky above in a grand display of colour and for those brief moments the constant battle between the raging sea and the ancient basalt columns took the backseat at a place which holds a special place in my heart. A humbling moment.
