Image Description
Being a landscape photographer I have witnessed some pretty special events but nothing like this. I visited the Sugar Pine Forest plantation located near Batlow in search of getting some rare snowfall at this location. There was a small window of opportunity where two days of snow looked likely. Upon arriving at Batlow I was absolutely shattered to find no snow had fallen in the last few days. It dawned on me that this trip was probably going to be another failed attempt. Driving from Batlow to the forest I didn’t really expect the conditions to change, but the landscape transformed as I turned down the road where the forest was located. When I arrived at the forest it was completely blanketed in snow. But it had stopped snowing, the image I had envisioned wouldn’t be possible. I shot the forest for about three hours with nothing really remarkable happening and no snow falling. The next morning the forest was coated in even more snow. A few flurries of snow came and went throughout the morning, but there was nothing I was satisfied with. I decided to pack up and head back to the car and accept defeat. As soon as I started the car engine the snow started bucketing down. The image I wanted was at the other end of the pine forest. I started running the five hundred metres in hope the snow would last long enough. Getting to the end of the pines I dialled in my camera settings, set up the tripod and the snow stopped. I was absolutely guttered. A few moments later the wind picked up and a massive flurry of snow fell into the pines once more. I managed to shoot four exposures, the back of the camera went black as I waited for the results. What happened next gave me goose bumps and saw a five year vision become a reality. In this brief moment everything came together and I just stared at the back of my camera in amazement and started smiling.
